Owatonna Public Schools Community Task Force on Facilities

For the past year, the Owatonna School District has been studying its facilities to identify the most appropriate and cost effective ways to handle various facilities needs - including aging school buildings with a growing list of deferred maintenance needs, elementary crowding, school security issues, multiple school transitions and inadequate space for high school athletics.

In January, a Community Task Force on Facilities was formed that consisted of 36 community members. After three months of study; more than 20 hours of meetings; review of hundreds of pages of documentation; development of 14 criteria to help guide their decisions; and discussion of a dozen or more options - the Task Force presented recommendations for addressing the school district’s facilities needs for at least the next decade to the School Board in May.  The Task Force identified elementary crowding, deferred maintenance and school security as the pressing needs, but also noted the aging high school needs to be addressed at some point.

To gather community input on the recommendations, the School Board hosted two public information sessions and commissioned a random-sample phone survey of Owatonna School District residents regarding residents' opinions of the facilities recommendations and other feedback about the school district.  The School Board hopes to  make a final decision in late July about what school funding request to bring to voters on a November 3 ballot.
